🎉 Development Status Update
Update – Mid October 2026: Thorium has jumped two milestones again! Collaborator gz83 (still temporarily running the project while Alex313031 is away) has shipped M156.0.8078.28, skipping M155 and moving Thorium from Chromium 154 up to Chromium 156. The release landed on Oct 11, 2026 with builds for Windows, Linux, macOS and Android. As before, the downloads live on gz83’s fork, and the matching release on the main repo is a notification only. gz83 says this one feels quite stable and plans to submit his M156-Stable branch to Alex as a pull request for review.
Thorium is currently tracking recent Chromium milestones closely, with new rebases landing every few weeks. That means upstream security fixes reach Thorium much sooner than they used to. 💙

- 🚀 Rebased from Chromium 154.0.8037.45 to 156.0.8078.28, picking up two milestones’ worth of upstream security and stability patches in one go
- 🛡️ Bundled uBlock Origin updated to 1.75.0, still installed offline for new profiles
- 🎨 Improved icon switching across the browser UI and WebUI, so the –disable-thorium-icons flag now properly restores Chromium’s rounded and legacy icons
- 📱 Android extensions and on-device DevTools updated for M156, including a fix for the missing extension-feature declaration that broke Android builds
- 📥 Legacy download shelf adapted to Chromium’s updated active-content view API
- 🔧 V8 snapshot dependencies fixed for Windows SSE2 installer packaging and macOS framework resources
- 🖼️ Chromium goodies: JPEG XL decoding is on by default using the new Rust-based decoder, with progressive images, HDR and animation all supported
- 🌐 More Chromium goodies: CSS gains symbols(), margin-trim, random() and :navigation-source, JavaScript modules can import text directly and retry failed fetches, and WebCrypto adds the post-quantum ML-KEM, ML-DSA and X-Wing algorithms plus ChaCha20-Poly1305
- 🧪 Still marked beta until Alex313031 signs off, so please report any issues in the main Thorium repository

This is because Thorium is a modified version of Chromium (the open-source project that Chrome is based on) and each new Chromium milestone takes time to rebase, patch and build. Releases have been landing every few weeks lately, but there can still be a gap.
